Re: Banfield's First Shield for Dogs

After surfing the web and all the horror stories I found your link and am
sad to say my dog Claire and I have been victims of this poison. I am a chef
for a catering company in Houston and with a crazy month in December had
just a few moments to stop and buy flea meds for my girl. I stopped at
Petsmart looking for Advantage, the receptionist at Banfield told me they no
longer carry Advantage but have a newer-better product, I bought the meds
and went straight home and applied it according to manufacturer's directions
to Claire. Working very long hours and having very little sleep I was barely
aware of Claire restlessness. The following AM she was acting tired but
figured her body clock was just as messed up as mine was due to my crazy
schedule. With in 48 hours of applying the product Claire was soooo sick. I
came home to massive amounts of vomit, not food vomit or even stomach bile,
it was clear and "snotty", there was also diarrhea everywhere. I took her
outside and she had explosive diarrhea, it looked dark in color but since it
was night time I could not see very well. When we came back in she drank her
entire large bowl of water and threw it up immediately. I got a hold of my
boss who grew up on a farm and has dealt with all kinds of animal issues. He
asked if she was responsive and she was and if she was lethargic, she was
not. He said to keep and eye on her and if I need to get her to the vet he
would be there for us. Claire is a 120lb Rottie so picking her up is not an
option. I gave her ice cubes and vegetable broth and stayed up all night
with her. The next day she was better, tired and still diarrhea but it
seemed she was on a up swing so I continued to keep an eye on her and went
back to the grind of Christmas and catering. It took a few days for me to
put the two together and realizing that I had been the one who made my girl
sick by using First Shield on her. After almost a week later she is feeling
a lot better and I think she is going to be fine but the idea of me
poisoning my beloved girl is over whelming and the thought that people are
allowed to sell poison to the public is even more disconcerting. Something
has to be done about this and I am willing to do what ever it takes to help
get this poison off the market. I could not live with myself if she would
have not survived this ordeal and if knowing someone else might be going
through this. Please let me know how I can help STOP THE POISONING
OF PETS! I did contact the Schuyler, LLC and left them a message but
do not plan on hearing back.

NRDC Lawsuit Secures Warning Labels for Toxic Flea Collars in California,
but Nationwide Ban is Sorely Needed

http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/mrotkinellman/nrdc_lawsuit_secures_warning_l.html

Excerpts:

"The good news for cats, dogs, and their human families today is that, thanks to a lawsuit
filed by NRDC, toxic flea collars in California that contain the cancer-causing chemical propoxur will not be sold without warning labels."

"Today’s news – the result of a settlement agreement in our lawsuit – is a positive step
forward for protecting human and animal health.  With a safety warning on the box,
consumers are better able to make informed decisions and avoid using toxic pet products, like flea collars with propoxur, in their home.  This is especially important for families
with children that spend a lot of time with their pet.  Young children are especially
at risk from the chemicals in flea collars because their bodies and brains are still developing and their play activities can mean a lot of contact with a pet and ingestion of chemical residues when they frequently put their hands in their mouths."

"The not so good news is that these toxic products are still allowed to be sold."

Some Flea collars with propoxur include:

   * Adam’s brand “Plus” collars
   * Bio Spot brand collars
   * Sentry brand “Dual Action” collars
   * Sergeant’s brand collars
   * Vet Kem brand “Tick Away” collars
   * Zodiac
